Virgene Morse was notified this week of the death of her sister-in-law, Evelyn Jean Leidig, 90, of Loganville, Georgia. She passed away on July 18, 2017. She was born November 25, 1926 in Rippey, Iowa to Arthur W. “Harvey” and Della (McClatchy) Morse. After her graduation from Rippey High School in 1944, she was employed as a telegraph operator in Omaha, Nebraska. She met her husband, Donald M.Leidig through the mail while working there. He was serving in Europe in the U.S. Army and they were pen pals until she relocated to Groton, New York, where they were married in June of 1946.
Along with raising their family, she was also a professional housewife until 1957 when she went to work in the Groton High School cafeteria until her retirement in 1979. She served with the Meals on Wheels program from 1980 until 1990.
She was also an active member of the Groton Methodist church until churches joined together to form the Groton Community Church. All of her years in the church she was very active in the church choir as a soprano that could be heard for blocks as she often practiced while ironing clothes.
Evelyn moved to Loganville several years ago to be closer to family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Donald M. Leidig; sisters, Eleanor Whiton and Shirley Rasmussen; and two brothers, Daleand Lyle Morse.
She is survived by one sister Anna-Margaret Folkemer, son Donald E, Leidig and wife Pamela Jean(Remter) Leidig, a daughter Sandra Jean (Leidig) Phillips and husband, Johnny Phillips. Also surviving are five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A memorial service will beheld in Groton, New York at a later date in September at Groton Cemetery.
