Rippey Time Capsule Items Revealed

Share

When Roy Bardole and the Reverend Edward Sullivan placed Rippey Centennial items into the time capsule in the summer of 1971, Roy probably did not plan to aid in the review of those articles this past summer at the 150+1 celebration. When Mayor Dan Brubaker was stationed in Vietnam in 1971, his father, Bill, welded the metal time capsule together and encased the capsule in a cement structure in the Osborn Park. Some 50 plus years later, now Mayor, Dan was instrumental in opening the concrete vault and searing the metal time capsule open to reveal the contents.

While several people were able to view the items as they were removed on July 31st, many did not have the opportunity. Photographs of the items taken by Rippey News Webmaster, Sarah Killgore.

There were fourteen 1970 The Globe Free Press newspapers and one 1969 Perry Daily Chief. They can be viewed on The Community History Archives of Greene County Iowa website at: https://greenecounty.advantage-preservation.com/

There was also a brown photo album with many photographs. The photographs will be shared at a later date.

Rippey Begins Planning for Bicentennial of Town

The original time capsule contents will be re-positioned, and items from the Sesquicentennial (150+1) are being inserted for reburial. It will be re-opened for the celebration to be held in 2071, the bicentennial birthday of Rippey. Items to be included are souvenirs from the recent celebration, including merchandise donated by TC&B Authentic, an I REMEMBER RIPPEY book, DVD, and thumb drives videos of the day’s events, along with hard copy pictures. Sarah has also taken photographs of the new articles to be placed and they will be available for viewing on the Rippey News website soon.

A glass jar of corn and soybeans, along with documentation of the price per bushel of grain paid by the Heartland Cooperative on July 31st will be inserted. The Covid Pandemic caused the delay of the celebration so a mask, a syringe, and empty vaccine bottle will also be added.

Sealing of the time capsule and reburial in the cement vault located in Osborn Park will occur in fall of 2021.
