Services for Janice Iola McDowell were held 3:00 p.m. Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Hastings Funeral Home in Perry. Visitation with family were two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Pastor’s Enna Antunez and Paul Burrow of the First United Methodist Church of Perry provided words of comfort.
Honorary casket bearers were Mackenzie McDowell, Russ Laub, Louie Laub, Bernie Wernli, Leon McDowell, Danny McDowell, Jim Odin, Larry Nelson and Marvin Morgart. Casket bearers were: Garrett McDowell, Kurt Laub, Mike, Laub, Kris Laub, Mitch Laub and Justin Peterson.
The pianist was Marjorie Vannatta and Soloist Brenda Roberts. Hymns chosen were In Eagle’s Wings and How Great Thou Art. Interment took place at the Rippey Cemetery in Rippey, Iowa. A lunch followed the committal at the Rippey United Methodist Church.
Janice Iola McDowell, daughter of George Challands and Annie Louise Johnson, was born May 5, 1931 in Perry, Iowa and died January 15, 2014 at the Rowley Memorial Masonic Home in Perry, Iowa. Janice grew up in Perry and graduated from Perry High School in 1949. On April 22, 1956 in Perry Janice and John Douglas (J. D.) McDowell were united in marriage. The couple moved to Rippey where they started their family. They were blessed with three sons, Craig, David and Dennis who died at birth.
Janice worked at the Chamber of Commerce and she was an Administrative Assistant at Woodward Resource Center for 6 years. She also worked at Ben Franklin’s and Pamida as a cashier. Janice enjoyed going to the Tama Casino, Prairie Meadows and Osceola. She also liked couple’s bowling, crossword puzzles and bingo. Janice was a big Cub’s fan and also enjoyed going fishing.
Janice was preceded in death by her parents, husband J.D (Feb. 13, 2007), and son Dennis Jon who died at birth, Oct. 3, 1962. Janice is survived by her sons, Craig McDowell of Des Moines and David McDowell (Christine) of Ogden; grandchildren Mackenzie and Garrett McDowell of Ogden; twin sister Joyce Laub (Louie) of Grand Junction and sister Sharon Laub (Russ) of Rippey; other relatives and many friends.
