Services were held Sunday, August 2, at the Rippey United Methodist Church for Mary Elizabeth Bardole, 86, longtime Rippey area resident.
The Rev. Missy Brown, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Rippey and Perry, and the Rev. Eric Guy of Urbandale officiated. Brenda Roberts was vocal soloist. Pianist was Marjorie Vannatta and violinist was Janice Johnston. There was also congregational singing.
Honorary casket bearers were Heidi Fornes, Heather Hubert, Shannon Bardole, Erin Englin and Elizabeth Hick. Casket bearers were Peter, Timothy, Nathan, Andrew, Jason and Stephen Bardole and Haven Hick. Interment was in Rippey Cemetery.
Mary Elizabeth Hawley Bardole, daughter of Roy Romulas Hawley and Clara M. Barrett Hawley, was born October 1, 1917 in Jefferson. She died August 19, 2004 at Dallas County Hospital in Perry.
Mary graduated from Jefferson high School with the Class of 1936. She received her teaching certificate and taught school for three years.
On August 13, 1939, she was united in marriage to Paul Bardole at First United Methodist Church in Jefferson. Mary and Paul made their home on a farm near Rippey, where they raised five children, Jay, Roy, Donald, Dick and Mary Ann. Mary and Paul had recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
Mary’s life was spent caring for her family and those in and around her community. She was a member of the Rippey United Methodist Church, which she attended every Sunday and where she was known as “Grandma Mary” as she was the nursery attendant for many years, taught Sunday school and was a member of Ladies Aid.
She was a “pink lady” at Greene County Medical Center for many years.
For many years during the holiday season Mary and Paul invited senior citizens to their home. With the assistance of their children and families they served a meal, entertained and sent the guests home with a box of goodies.
Mary spent many hours creating scrapbooks as well as Quietbooks for children as a fundraiser for the Ladies Aid.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Paul.
Survivors include her husband, Paul; four sons, Jay and his wife Ellen of Vincennes, IN, Roy and his wife Phyllis of Rippey, Donald and his wife Alice of Davenport, and Dick and his wife Jo of Ogden, one daughter, Mary Ann Hick and her husband, Kevin of Rippey; one sister, Avis Jantz and her husband Olan of Jefferson; sister in law, Virginia Hawley of Tucson, AZ; a cousin; 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
