Richard Matthew Weir, son of Alfred Matthew Weir and Edna Mae Clark Weir was born January 11, 1949 in Ida Grove, Iowa and died July 1, 2005 at his home in Perry, Iowa at the age of 56.
Rick, as he was fondly known, grew up in the Ida Grove and Storm Lake areas. He completed his secondary education through the GED program and continued his education through DMACC.
Rick was honorably discharged from the Marines and served in the Marine Reserves for four years. He received the National Defense Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and Rifle Expert Badge.
Rick worked for Armstrong Tire on the night shift and owned Rick’s Shoe and Saddle Shop for fourteen years where he worked days. He also worked at Oscar Meyer until 1983 and was currently employed by Xenia Rural Water District.
Rick loved his family and enjoyed leather working, making shoes and boots. He also loved attending the races and taking vacations with his grandchildren. He was a member of First Chrisitan Church in Perry and the Rippey Fire Department.
Rick was preceded in death by his father, Alfred; and infant daughter, Tammy Lynn; a grandson Cody Cooklin; a sister, Linda Peterson; a brother-in-law, Jack Potter; and a niece, Sandra Georgina Weir.
Rick is survived by his mother Edna, of Perry, Iowa; a special friend, Ann Johnson of Perry, Iowa; two sons, Rick and his wife Colleen of Dawson and Matthew and friend, Tessa Ferguson of Jefferson, Iowa; a daughter, Tina Cooklin and Davy of Rippey; 13 grandchildren, Maddi, Sara, Abbi, Tyler, Kalyn, Cale, Harleigh, Jamie, Jordy, Conner, Bradley, Claire and Sophie; his sister, Louise Potter of Perry, Iowa; two brothers, George Weir and his wife, Sandy, of Ida Grove, Iowa; and Brian Weir of Perry, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Frank Peterson of Alta, Iowa; aunts, Effie Rohde and Ruby Weir, both of Estherville, Iowa and Margaret Berard of Canada; numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
Hastings Funeral Home in Perry was in charge of arrangements and memorials may be left at the funeral home.
