Rippey Community Center
Matt Phippen, RAGBRAI Ride Director met with Phyllis Bardole, Pete Bardole, Dan Brubaker, Dale Hanaman, Nancy Hanaman, Kevin Hick, and Mary Weaver at 10:20 A.M. on May 17th.
Anne Lawrie, RAGBRAI cycling director, was unable to attend as she was working on coordination activities for the Rocky Mountain ride that she directs.
RAGBRAI registration closed on May 15, with 29,000 expected (including day riders) along with 595 rider support vehicles.
Matt reminded participants that people will be encouraged to leave Rippey by the Iowa State Patrol by 2:30. There are two teams of Iowa State Patrol that work the ride. The ride from Carroll to Ames is a century day, but relatively flat, so day riders may join to achieve that recognition.
Since Carroll and Rippey both have baseball teams, RAGBRAI may develop merchandise to include jerseys. We recommended he contact Clark Fessler at Authentic Brand. He was aware of Clark’s company.
Mary asked about obtaining the RAGBRAI movie “SHIFT” that could be shown pre-event on the side of the former Rippey school some summer evening. Matt will put Mary in contact with the film producer.
Matt explained a rider disability team will need a place that is air conditioned and has bathroom facilities. Dan will make this request to open the large west community room to the City Council at the June 5th meeting.
Currently Dan believes he has 8 vendors but is hoping for 12 more.
The next pre-ride Rippey visit will be June 6, when up to 40 riders will be accompanying the representatives from the Highway Patrol, and the mobile emergency room. The group will arrive at 1:00 and be in Rippey for one hour. Lunch will be served by the Baseball Commission, Fire Department/Lions, and the Methodist Church at the Community Room. RAGBRAI will bring their own alcoholic beverages.
The meeting concluded at 11:15.
