Several years ago I was asked how Velda became, “The Mouth of Rippey.” A couple of people have inquired in the last few months. I figured she must have written about it. I also knew I probably had it in her family history file. It took a little digging, but I’m good at that! I was at the same Mother-Daughter banquet when the logo was created. It was a fun evening…Jean Borgeson

New Job New Hours for “Mouth of Rippey”
Last February I started a new job at Woodward State Hospital and School. I am working the p. m. shift and also work every other weekend which makes collecting the Rippey news different and more difficult for everyone.
I would like to continue writing the news, because it keeps me in contact with many of you. A good time to reach me is 9 a. m. til noon, and if that doesn’t fit your schedule, try from 10:45 to 11:30 p. m.
A friend once introduced me as the “Mouth of Rippey,” hopefully because of my Rippey News program on KDLS, but the real “news lady of Rippey” is Ferne Holmes, who has written the Rippey News faithfully over many years. She is my walking information resource, assisting reporter and friend, all rolled into one.
A special thanks to Ferne for her help with the news, especially during the past three weeks when I didn’t have the time or desire.
Sometimes we think our news isn’t important enough to bother about putting in the paper. You would be surprised at the number of people who live at a distance, who look forward to receiving news from “home.” Our Rippey news is also well read with Greene County as well.

Rippey News, Velda’s Varieties
Thanks to the Rippey Lions for the nice Mother-Daughter Banquet, a good tradition to continue. There were folks from Jefferson, Perry, Des Moines, Altoona and Marshalltown as well as ‘‘the locals.”
The program was handled well by Buck Jones, a nice young man who is a cartoonist. I hope the Globe will be able to reproduce my personal characterization after ‘‘friends’’ told him I was referred to as ‘‘The Mouth of Rippey.”

Yes, Velda, we were able to reproduce this likeness, a definite resemblance, don’t you think? Only kidding!!
Soon after, this was used until the last issue of the Globe was published in June, 1999.
