Greetings to Friends of Rippey,
Plans are progressing nicely for the July 25 meeting place in Rippey.
Below are the minutes from the most recent meeting.
Know that you will be receiving a call in May if you have not already volunteered to help with Lion’s, Church, Baseball, or Fire Dept.
All hands will be needed to handle this influx of up to 50,000 persons to our town.
Here is to a great event!!!
April 28, 2023
Dan Brubaker, Garry Higgins, Charity Kendall, Janice Johnston, Cara McCoy, Brad Rowe, Dick Bardole, Nancy Hanaman, Dale Hanaman, Bobbi Dollinger, Kiersten Jass, Selvin Gonzales, and Mary Weaver were in attendance. Kevin Hick and Mary representing the baseball commission were unable to attend, but Mary reported for them.
The meeting was opened by Mayor Dan at 7:00 P.M.
The minutes were sent to all electronically following the April 14 meeting.
Dan has placed the $10,000 check from the Des Moines Register/Gannett, into the Rippey RAGBRAI account. No checks have been written, but portable toilets with some hand washing units, and trash receptacles, have been reserved. Tents/tarps for shade/ will be ordered also. Dan will have a budget established for review by the May 19 meeting.
Street repair to patch potholes on the route must be completed by the City of Rippey prior to the event.
Dan distributed maps showing the location of the band and beer garden, the route, and the vendor locations on the north and south side of main street. The band will be in the location of the former library/restaurant, west of the residence of Brubaker’s. Goose neck trailers will be placed in that area as a platform for the band. The vendors will be established on Main Street using both the north and south side. Bike repair stations and the emergency mobile unit will be on the north and south side streets. (In front of Liebich’s to the south, and Millard’s and Johnston’s to the north. The cables to be used as bike racks in the alleys north of Main Street. Portable toilets will be on the east and west side of Brubaker shop. The water bottle filling stations and hand washing station’s locations were not discussed.
Clark Fessler of TCB has designed t shirts for the volunteers. Purple in color, with a logo of R (from Rippey) along with the water tower. Thank you, Clark!
It is estimated 25-30 volunteers outside of the Methodist Church, Baseball Commission, Fire Dept, and Lion’s club will be needed. It was encouraged that by the next meeting the organizations have a listing of their volunteers, so people not on the list may be called for volunteer duties. The Baseball Commission has determined they will be selling beer during RAGBRAI.
The food vendor application was distributed. The cost will be $350.00 payable to the City of Rippey. (City of Rippey must obtain a food license if there are more than 10 vendors), and proof of event insurance. The applications must be turned in by May 25, and the food vendor license must be applied for by June 25. Expect a food inspector visit prior to July 25.
Shuttle bus/support vehicle parking will be available at the Landus campus, and pasture to the east and south. It may be necessary to park shuttles on the streets. Walkie/talkie radios will be obtained so parking volunteers may communicate with each other, as it is expected cell phone services will have crashed.
Volunteers will be needed to direct shuttles/support RV’s to parking, provide information, and empty trash.
The RAGBRAI people for the pre-ride will be returning May 16 around 10-10:30 ish. We will not serve them lunch, but rather cinnamon rolls. June 6 will be the pre-RAGBRAI bike riders, up to 40 persons. We will serve lunch that day.
Mary handed out schedules for the Rippey Baseball Commission, with a reminder the Rippey Ruckus begins on Friday evening May 5.
The next meeting will be held on May 19 at 7:00 P.M. in the Community Room.
