The Rippey Community Center was filled with veterans and their family members on Sunday afternoon April 6. Nine individuals received Quilts of Valor. These commemorative quilts were created and presented by the Perry Piecemakers Quilts of Valor.
The history of the importance of quilts in the lives of soldiers, was given by Pat Mundy. This included the need for warmth of those serving in the Revolutionary War, along with the signage used on quilts to guide during the Underground Railroad.
Barb Hansen called upon 7 Army Veterans, and also an Air Force and Marine Veteran. A history of their service was read and they were then cloaked in a quilt and thanked for their service to the Country.
Kathy Fox played the service person’s military song prior to the wrapping of the quilt around the individual.
Anyone who has been honorably discharged from the military is eligible to receive a Quilt of Valor
The afternoon was completed with light refreshments that were served by the quilting group members.
The Perry Area Quilters have made 150 quilts in their 4 years of service. Each quilt has fabric and batting that equals $300.00, plus the in-kind labor of love from the individual quilt volunteers.
The inductees and their families expressed appreciation for their quilts.
